Programme profile

Psychiatric Nursing integrates into the fabric of society. The unique role of the nurse involves one to one interaction with patient/clients and their families resulting in great personal job satisfaction. The nurse plays a central role in the health care team. The School of Nursing and Midwifery promotes personal, professional and academic development through the provision of college and practice-based learning. The aim of the programme is to foster the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and professional values..

One in four people experience mental health problems at some time in their life. Psychiatric nurses form part of a group of health professionals who support people to understand such experiences, guide them to cope with such experiences, and where possible, assist them in their recovery. This is done through what is generally referred to as the development of therapeutic relationships which forms the essence of a psychiatric nurse
